Chapter Twelve

When Georgia got back to Heaton House that evening, she was more than thankful she lived there. Sir Tyler’s words had haunted her all afternoon. At the boardinghouse there was always someone to listen to anyone who needed to talk, but he really had no one close to him now.

Oh, she was sure that Mr. Tate had become his sounding board over the years, but that wasn’t the same as talking things over with a wife. How he must miss her! Georgia could only imagine, for she’d had no husband, but she did know how her parents seemed to always seek each other out to talk over all manner of things.

And her boardinghouse family wasn’t the same, either, but they were there and she felt a sense of homecoming every time she walked in the door.

“Georgia,” Julia called from the parlor, “come tell us how your table-manner lessons went today!”

She’d told them all about it the night before and they’d been very supportive. She hurried into the room and took a seat. “It went even better than I expected. And the girls are having such fun and catching on very fast!”

“Should I start on an outfit or two for those dinners with their papa?” Betsy asked.

“Oh, I’d say yes. Sir Tyler mentioned that his in-laws will be returning to the country soon, and should they allow them to have dinner with them, they’ll look their best.”

“Do you think they would refuse to eat dinner with their granddaughters?” Mrs. Heaton asked.

Georgia knew that Mrs. Heaton would be appalled if they did. “I have no idea. I would hope not! And these are the American ones, so—”

“One never knows these days,” Mrs. Heaton said. “But these are their granddaughters and it would most likely be a family dinner, so surely they would be happy for any time they might have with them.”

“I certainly hope so. And I want to have them ready for when they do get here,” Georgia said. “Maybe we can choose some fabric on Saturday?”

“That sounds great. We know the styles the girls like and the colors, so I believe we can pick something out they’ll love.”

“Thanks, Betsy. They’ll love it.”

The boarders decided to make a quick trip to the ice-cream shop and Georgia was happy to join them. But as they passed Walker House, she wondered what Sir Tyler was doing. He’d taken his test, so he wouldn’t be studying as he had ever since she’d been working there.

For a moment she was tempted to stop and ask if he wanted to join them. But her good sense stopped her. He was her employer, after all! Not just a neighbor. Not even a friend, although she thought of him that way sometimes. Wished he was. Well, she’d best get that kind of thinking out of her mind. His social set didn’t make friends with working people. Not really.

“What are you woolgathering about now?” Julia asked after they’d passed the house and headed on to the ice-cream shop.
